The orca, better known as a killer whale, is a family oriented species. Like wolves, another family member will adopt an orphaned pup. Socially, orcas live in matrilines that are closely bonded family groups consisting of a mother and her offspring. Traveling in groups called Pods, families that associate with each other form the community. A female orca can live a long life (averaging 50 years & can be 80 or more) giving her daughters ample time in which to nourish their own offspring who in turn learn habits and traditions which are passed on to succeeding generations.
